MEDITATION for ALL AGES

Meditation is also a part of Seido’s annual outdoor events. At beach training every August, students sit facing the ocean in “zazen” (seated meditation) as the sun rises, listening to the sounds of the waves. This quiet period is followed by a workout on sand and in the water. During walking meditation every December, students deliver donations to local charities after walking silently through the streets of Manhattan..

In addition to the physical aspect of training, meditation is integral to Seido karate as it helps students develop a calm, focused mind. Kaicho and Nidaime lead meditation classes for adults and teens that include lectures on various themes from Japanese philosophy. By sitting still and concentrating on their breathing, students are able to quiet their thoughts. When this mindset carries over into the training, karate becomes moving Zen.
