Kyoshi Horace

Kyoshi Horace Anderson started training in Seido karate in 2001, inspired in part by the kung fu movies he and his cousins watched as kids on Saturday afternoons on Channel 5 — and the reenactments they tried on each other afterward.

When it came time for him to choose a dojo as an adult, Kyoshi Horace was impressed by Seido’s focus on the individual development of students physically, mentally, and spiritually. After one trial class, he sensed that Seido was a place where anyone was welcome to train, and the wide diversity of students and instructors was a big attraction for him.

Kyoshi Horace has participated in a number of tournaments over the years, including the Seido Aichi 15th Anniversary & Benefit Tournament in Japan in 2007, where he placed 3rd in black belt kumite.

He has been teaching since 2009, first assisting white belts and now teaching contact kumite. Through his experience as an instructor, he has learned that Kaicho was right: People of all ages and abilities can benefit from karate training. In his classes, he emphasizes that the most important thing to remember is to be patient with yourself and with others.

Kyoshi Horace is a law professor and dean of the law school at Pace University in White Plains. His two sons are also Seido students. In his free time he enjoys traveling with them and his wife, including to Tanzania, where he and his wife climbed to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in 2023. His favorite kata is Pinan V.
