Jun Shihan Greg

Jun Shihan Greg Karnilaw started training in Seido karate in 1990. He had previously studied judo for a year.

He started assisting Sei Shihan Bobby Henderson’s 12:30 white belt classes when he was a green belt and has been assisting or teaching ever since. He currently teaches a white belt class for adults; peewee, junior, and youth classes; and meditation, kumite, and kumite conditioning classes for all kids.

Jun Shihan Greg stresses patience in his classes and aims to ensure that students don’t discourage themselves. Throughout his many years as an instructor, he has learned that he needs to be and stay mentally flexible in order to do his best to teach students of different ages, physical abilities, and learning processes.

He has regularly competed in Seido’s Anniversary & Benefit Tournaments, placing first in his division in master’s kata in 2018 and second in lightweight kumite when he was a nidan.

When he’s not training or teaching, Jun Shihan Greg works as a private chef and composer. He has made several award-winning films and enjoys bird watching, making music, and working with wood by chopping and splitting it, then carving the pieces into spoons. His favorite kata is Sai Kata Ganki Sho.
