Introduction To Seido
Seido Karate is now accepting new students! No matter your skill level, we are happy to welcome you to our community. If you are interested to see what being a Seido student is all about, contact intro@seido.com or schedule a trial class.
The Seido Difference
Seido Karate was founded by Kaicho Tadashi Nakamura based on what he felt was the true essence of karate: the training of body, mind, and spirit together in order to realize the fullness of human potential. In Seido, the only competition is with yourself, and the only goal is that each day when you leave the dojo, you are a little better than when you came. We provide you with the program, supervision, and atmosphere that will allow you to realize your full potential for growth and achievement.
The core curriculum consists of general classes, kata, kumite, and meditation classes. This includes both “general” (all belts) and “rank specific” classes, which focus on each belt level’s syllabus. Kumite class is for intermediate and advanced students. Meditation is an integral part of training in Seido and all members are encouraged to attend. Full gi is mandatory for all classes unless noted otherwise.
Open to Green belts and up. This is a sparring class that helps students practice the exchange and point system fighting styles. Mandatory equipment includes mouthguard, hand and foot protectors, headgear, and groin cup for men or chest protector for women. Forearm and shin guards are optional. Class length is 45 minutes.
Open to all levels from beginner White belts through Black belts. This traditional class consists of an overview of all hand and leg techniques, moving stances, self-defense, kata, and pad work. The format will vary slightly depending on the instructor. Assistant instructors will help any new students. Class length is 1 hour.
Beginner Classes
When you start, you will attend special White belt classes for beginners, which allow you to ease into the program slowly and safely. It is not necessary that you have any previous karate experience—though you are just as welcome if you do!— or that you are in good physical condition. All Seido students progress at a pace consistent with their ability and level of fitness. Each class begins with stretching to help prevent injury or soreness, and the full-body physical training emphasizes progressive development of strength, coordination, stamina, and aerobic capacity. Seido Karate is also one of the most effective and efficient forms of self-defense available. You will learn to use your entire body as a weapon, developing the ability to protect yourself. Seido Karate is a practical tool for personal safety, because of both the physical training and the increased confidence it instills.
You will also be introduced to basic meditation techniques. Seido meditation is a time-proven method for developing a calm, focused mind. The emphasis on mental wellness combined with our karate training creates a quality called “Bushido Spirit,” which means a non-quitting attitude that can be applied to every aspect of one’s life.
