Breaking
What will we be breaking?
For the educational purposes of this seminar, the materials used for breaking are pine boards.
Will boards be provided?

Yes. Boards will be available for purchase at Honbu.
Cost of boards
At this time, estimated cost is$2 per board.

How does the seminar work?
Kaicho will spend some time explaining to students:
- what to look for in a good board
- how to set up your board(s) correctly
- the body mechanics involved in breaking
- different breaking techniques that can be used

After the explanation, the remainder of the seminar will be spent on breaking. Several breaking stations will be set up, each supervised by a different instructor. You will take your boards with you to a breaking station and start from there, working your way through as many breaking stations as you choose.

There is no set itinerary; you choose the breaks you want to focus on, and work with instructors at each station until you reach proficiency. Once you are comfortable with what you have achieved at any station, you are free to move to a different one.

For beginners, it is recommended that you start with a goal of breaking a single board first, then work your way up to multiple boards.

What will I learn?
You will have the opportunity to learn:
- straight-down breaks on boards placed on cinder blocks
- do's and don'ts of positioning boards on cinder blocks
- how to break multiple boards
- how to break using kicking techniques
- breaks in which others hold the board in front of you
- how to hold a board for someone else
- how to self-correct when your board won't break

What to expect
I'm interested in participating, but I'm afraid I'll hurt myself. What should I do?
Board-breaking is not as comfortable as, say, sitting on a couch. Depending on how many boards you break, the pain level can be likened to a heavy session of kumite: some soreness and bruising is normal, especially for beginners. However, a successful break (whether one board or many) can yield a sense of exhilaration that cannot be compared to anything else.

Much of breaking is mental; the rest is basic body mechanics, which you will learn. If you are curious but nervous, purchase just one or two boards, then find one of the many instructors who will work with you.

There is no minimum or maximum number of boards you are expected to break, so you can go at your own pace.
