Non-Core Class DescriptionsOpen
to all color belts, this traditional class consists of an overview of all
hand & leg techniques, moving stances, self-defense, kata, and pad work. Class
format will vary slightly depending on the instructor. Full gi is mandatory.
KATA (45 minutes)
Open to Adv. White belts and up, this class covers kata for each level along with a review of previous katas for more senior students. Push-ups, sit-ups, squats, and stretching are done between katas. Full gi is mandatory.
MEDITATION (45 minutes)
Open to all students, this class begins with a 10-minute warm-up with breathing exercises. Then, 20 minutes of meditation accompanied by soothing Japanese music. Following the meditation, Kaicho gives a 15 minute lecture on Japanese philosophy to inspire any student. Full gi is mandatory.
RANK SPECIFIC (1 hour+)
"Rank specific" refers to classes such as Blue & Yellow belt class, Green & Brown belt class, Black belt class, etc. These classes run similar to the "General" classes except they are specific to the rank and cover the syllabus closer. Black belt class on Wednesday night is approx. 1 hour & 45 minutes. Full gi is mandatory.
KUMITE (45 minutes)
Open to Green belts and up, this class is a sparring class for point fighting only. Exchanging of technique and drills for improving one's fighting are covered in this class. Full gi, mouthguard, hand & feet protector, headgear, and groin cup/ chest protector is mandatory.
BEGINNER (1 hour)
Open to all White & Adv. White belt students. This class is an introduction to Seido Karate and is crucial to any students' training. Basic hand and leg techniques, self-defense, pad work, and explanation of terms and protocol are covered in this class. Full gi is mandatory.
SEMI-CONTACT KUMITE (1 hour)
Open to Brown Belts and up, this is a challenging class that requires consistent attendance and good communication with Kaicho. Harder contact and advanced drills for stamina are a part of every class. Full gi, min. 10oz. gloves, mouthguard, hand & feet protector, headgear, groin cup/chest protector. Students must apply to attend this class.
REVIEW (1 hour)
Open to select belts depending on day. This class is exactly what it says; it is geared toward students returning from an absence as well as those who wish to brush up on their technique. The format of the class is similar to a "General" class and you are encouraged to ask the instructor questions before or after class. Full gi is mandatory.
Non-Core Classes
POWER STRETCH (45 minutes)
Open to all students, this class begins with a brief warm-up to increase blood circulation. The following 35 minutes are designated for individual stretching and stretching with a partner. Students typically attend this class before or after another more strenuous class. Full gi is mandatory.
ADVANCED TECHNIQUE (45 minutes)
Open to Green belts and up, this class focuses on Seido's self-defense (Basic & Intermediate) as well as other practical applications for street self-defense. Although this class goes over ground fighting with joint locks, it is a controlled, safe environment. Full gi is mandatory.
FIGHT STRATEGY (1 hour)
Open to Blue belts and up, this class gives a head start to Blue and Yellow belts for "Kumite" and also gives senior belts an opportunity to brush up on their basics in point fighting. Class consists of combinations with application, footwork, tactics for effective fighting, and some target practice. Full gi and mouthguard is mandatory. Handwraps are recommended.
ENDURANCE TRAINING (45 minutes)
Open to all students, this class is an aerobic class. A great way to increase stamina and speed in your technique, classes begin with a 10 min warm-up followed by 30 min of non-stop movement. Hand/leg combinations with jump rope in between. Seido T-shirt, gi pants, and belt required. Handwraps & 10-16oz. gloves are recommended.
CONDITIONING & PAD SKILLS (45 minutes)
Open to Blue belts and up, this class focuses on effective combinations and good habit forming skills while striking pads. Strength training drills are also a part of every class. Full gi is mandatory. Handwraps and or bag gloves are recommended to protect the wrist and knuckles while striking the pads.
PILATES (45 minutes)
Open to all students. Pilates has been used worldwide to develop all kinds of athletes from dancers to hockey players. It is a tried and true method of strengthening the core body and in the process creating healthier, better balanced bodies that are less prone to injury.
